Limited wireless on 4th floor Science Library, Sat 7 Nov

There will be very limited access to wireless and no network access in the 4th floor study rooms in the Science Library on Saturday 7th November.  This is due to the need for a cabinet swap on the 4th floor which is part of the works to deliver new I.T facilities in the new graduate Research Grid.

 

Research Grid move to Main Library – change of dates

Move dates for tpiche Research Grid in the Main Library have been slightly revised. The new move dates will allow graduates to access a number of Research Grid PCs during the move.  The most important dates are below:

 

Updated key move dates:

6 November 2015: Student locker belongings need to be removed by 6 November

6 November 2015: Research Grid moving to 2nd floor of Main Library (8 PCs will remain available in the Research Grid until the new Research Grid has working computers).

8 November: Research Grid available in the Main Library

23 December to 4 January: No access to the Research Grid

End of January 2016: Research Grid moving to 4th floor of Science Library

Earth Sciences reading room weekend closures – Science Library

This coming weekend, 31st October-1st November 2015, contractors will be working on the heating pipes in the Earth Sciences reading room and data cabling in the south end of the Engerneering reading room, as part of the new graduate Research Grid refurbishment project.

To carry out these works safely the Earth Sciences reading room and the south end of the Engineering reading room will be closed this weekend.

A book fetching service will be operating on Saturday, during the Help Point opening hours (11:00 – 18:00).

Graduate Research Grid temporary move to Main Library – November 7th

The graduatepic Research Grid will be temporarily moving up onto the second floor of the Main Library.

From November 7th the Main Library will be home to the Research Grid while refurbishment works to create an improved graduate Research Grid in the Science Library continue.

The temporary move will permit the start of urgent works for a new SEnIT suite in the Wilkins Building basement, delivering improved access to I.T workroom facilities for students with disabilities.

About the new temporary Research Grid

The new Main Library Research Grid will offer the same number of computer workstations for graduate students as the current Research Grid, giving 17 computer workstations in total. There will be a bookable seminar room, kettle, water dispenser and lockers. The new Grid will remain for the use of graduate students only.

The Main Library Research Grid will be found in rooms 224, 225 and 235 (seminar room), and will have the same opening hours as the Main Library. For graduate students looking for extended opening hours over the weekend the Graduate Hub will remain open 24/7.

The seminar room, once open, will be bookable via e-mail request to the Library Service Assistant team: lib-services@ucl.ac.uk

About the Graduate Research Grid, Science Library – opening January 2016

The permanent Research Grid in the Science Library will accommodate up to 74 graduate students and will offer a variety of workstations and study spaces which will suit individual study as well as collaborative social learning. The new learning space features a group meeting room with AV for up to 6 people, a private Skype point, student lockers, 24 all-in-one Desktop PCs, a hot water point for tea and coffee and a hot drinks vending machine.

Over the next two weekends (17/18th and 24th/25th October) contractors will be working on the heating pipes in the Earth Sciences reading room, as part of the new graduate Research Grid refurbishment project.

To carry out these works safely the reading room will be closed on the two weekends.

A book fetching service will be operating on the Saturdays, during the Help Point opening hours (11:00 – 18:00).

These works will cause some disruption to the heating in the Science Library. The heating will be off on the east side of the building until the works have been completed.

The 3 group study rooms in Senate House Hub can now be booked by students on-line using the ‘Book a Study room‘ page on the library website.

Science Library – Earth Sciences reading room closure
This weekend (10th/11th October) the Earth Sciences reading room will be closed to allow survey works for the new graduate Research Grid.

There will be a book fetching service available on the Saturday, during Help Point opening hours.

Main Library – Donaldson reading room
On Tuesday 13th October there will be some survey works in the Donaldson. These will be taking place between the hours of 6am and 10am (approximately). The reading room will be closed during this time for safety reasons.

Science Library clusters

The newly refurbished ground floor cluster will open a little earlier than expected, opening on Friday 25th September. The G15 Teaching Cluster will still open on Monday 28th.

 

Senate House Hub

Maintenance works in main study room – Sat 26th

The main study room will be having some floor maintenance take place on Saturday 26th September. This room will be closed throughout the day. The rest of the Hub will be open for study.

Science Library

Computer Clusters refurbishment

The refurbishment of the computer clusters in the Science Library will continue a little longer than expected due to problems with new data cables. The clusters will re-open on the following dates:

  • Mezzanine level cluster – open 21st September
  • Lower floor cluster and G15 teaching cluster – open 28th September

New Research Grid – 4th floor
Refurbishment worksresearch-grid are continuing on the 4th floor for the new Research Grid. Rescheduling of some works means that the new Research Grid is set to open in January 2016.

 

 

 

Main Library

Classics reading room and Donaldson reading room closed from Monday 14th Sep to Friday 18th Sep
The flooring in the Donaldson needs to have some sections replaced before the start of the new term. From Monday 14th (8am) until Friday 18th (5pm) contractors will be working in the reading room laying the new sections of flooring. The reading room will be closed during this time with a book fetching service operating for reading material.

Cleaning – Saturday 19th September
The cleaning team are continuing work cleaning away any dust and debris from areas high up on top of shelving and around light fittings in the Main Library. On Saturday 19th the following areas of the Main Library will be closed between 5am and 8.30am:

  • Donaldson reading room
  • Main entrance staircase (access to Main Library will be via the lift)

Senate House Hub

 
Senate House Hub closed – Saturday 19th September
Senate House Hub is having some maintenance works take place in reading rooms before the start of the new term. To allow the contractors to carry out their work the Hub will be closed on Saturday 19th.

Wilkins Terrace update – noisy works near Main Library

‘Tunnel A’

Work on ‘tunnel A’ continues down on the Wilkins Terrace site close to the JBR.

Contractors will be working pretty much continuously over the next 3 weeks in order to complete the breaking through of the concrete slab for the tunnel (which is expected to be the noisiest part of the ‘tunnel A’ excavation) before September 21st

Working hours on the site are 06:00 – 21:00.

Here are some photos of the recent work that the contractors have been doing on the ‘tunnel A’ trial pits down near the JBR (so you can see where the noise is coming from). ‘Tunnel A’ is scheduled to be complete at the beginning of December.

 

Other works

The breaking off of pile caps and steel works for the project will  be taking place on the old Physics Yard area of the site in the coming month.

Main Library – new study tables

On Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th August some Main Library reading rooms will be having study tables replaced with new ones. The following reading rooms will be closed on the Monday and Tuesday to allow the tables to be replaced and for shelving to be removed:

• Jewish studies
• Classics
• Public policy/International Relations/Politics Periodicals

This is expected to take the full 2 days, although rooms will re-open sooner if work is complete.
A book fetching service will be operating.
Also worth noting is that on Thursday 20th August there will be some disruption in the Classics reading room as re-shelving of materials will be taking place.

Science Library
There was a mighty clean up of the flooding in the restrooms yesterday. All areas were disinfected ready for use.
