The 4th floor including the Engineering reading room in the Science Library will be closed from 22:00 on Friday 27th until 12:00 on Saturday 28th. The closure is due to essential electrical installation works for the new Research Grid in the Science Library.
Works on ‘Tunnel A’ on the Wilkins Terrace site in the area close to the JBR will continue until around Easter. Underpinning of the tunnel will start next week and these works are expected to generate some noise. Works will last for approximately 6 weeks with noisy works taking place before 10am and after 4pm to minimise disruption to surrounding buildings including the Main Library.
Steelworks are continuing on the site of the ‘old physics yard’ constructing the new terrace for the project.
Cleaning of the Wilkins Building facade will start next week with a team of abseilers carrying out the work.
Window removal works in the North Cloisters will also start week commencing 23rd November and continue for approximately 3 weeks. This is not expected to cause significant noise disruption.
There will be very limited access to wireless and no network access in the 4th floor study rooms in the Science Library on Saturday 7th November. This is due to the need for a cabinet swap on the 4th floor which is part of the works to deliver new I.T facilities in the new graduate Research Grid.
Move dates for the Research Grid in the Main Library have been slightly revised. The new move dates will allow graduates to access a number of Research Grid PCs during the move. The most important dates are below:
Updated key move dates:
6 November 2015: Student locker belongings need to be removed by 6 November
6 November 2015: Research Grid moving to 2nd floor of Main Library (8 PCs will remain available in the Research Grid until the new Research Grid has working computers).
8 November: Research Grid available in the Main Library
23 December to 4 January: No access to the Research Grid
End of January 2016: Research Grid moving to 4th floor of Science Library
This coming weekend, 31st October-1st November 2015, contractors will be working on the heating pipes in the Earth Sciences reading room and data cabling in the south end of the Engerneering reading room, as part of the new graduate Research Grid refurbishment project.
To carry out these works safely the Earth Sciences reading room and the south end of the Engineering reading room will be closed this weekend.
A book fetching service will be operating on Saturday, during the Help Point opening hours (11:00 – 18:00).
The graduate Research Grid will be temporarily moving up onto the second floor of the Main Library.
From November 7th the Main Library will be home to the Research Grid while refurbishment works to create an improved graduate Research Grid in the Science Library continue.
The temporary move will permit the start of urgent works for a new SEnIT suite in the Wilkins Building basement, delivering improved access to I.T workroom facilities for students with disabilities.
About the new temporary Research Grid
The new Main Library Research Grid will offer the same number of computer workstations for graduate students as the current Research Grid, giving 17 computer workstations in total. There will be a bookable seminar room, kettle, water dispenser and lockers. The new Grid will remain for the use of graduate students only.
The Main Library Research Grid will be found in rooms 224, 225 and 235 (seminar room), and will have the same opening hours as the Main Library. For graduate students looking for extended opening hours over the weekend the Graduate Hub will remain open 24/7.
The seminar room, once open, will be bookable via e-mail request to the Library Service Assistant team: firstname.lastname@example.org
About the Graduate Research Grid, Science Library – opening January 2016
The permanent Research Grid in the Science Library will accommodate up to 74 graduate students and will offer a variety of workstations and study spaces which will suit individual study as well as collaborative social learning. The new learning space features a group meeting room with AV for up to 6 people, a private Skype point, student lockers, 24 all-in-one Desktop PCs, a hot water point for tea and coffee and a hot drinks vending machine.
Over the next two weekends (17/18th and 24th/25th October) contractors will be working on the heating pipes in the Earth Sciences reading room, as part of the new graduate Research Grid refurbishment project.
To carry out these works safely the reading room will be closed on the two weekends.
A book fetching service will be operating on the Saturdays, during the Help Point opening hours (11:00 – 18:00).
These works will cause some disruption to the heating in the Science Library. The heating will be off on the east side of the building until the works have been completed.
Senate House Hub – Group study rooms now bookable
The 3 group study rooms in Senate House Hub can now be booked by students on-line using the ‘Book a Study room‘ page on the library website.
