Induction 2022 update – What’s happening across UCL and at UCL East

By Angela Young, on 24 August 2022

What’s happening across UCL?

UCL Student Welcome and Induction have produced an overview and guidance on induction aimed at academic departments, and are holding an online briefing today, Wednesday 24 August at 3pm, open to all UCL staff. The guidance is available on the UCL Student Welcome and Induction MS Team, which any UCL staff can join, and includes information on:

  • Pre-arrival activities and communications: New students receive an email most Mondays. Key library information will be included in the email on 5 September.
  • New students checklists: Available on the New students web page, these include a link to the library online induction and FAQs about using our libraries.
  • Welcome events, including:
    • UCL 101: a guide to your first term, a student-led session about essentials for starting at UCL, including library information.
    • Support Services Fair, where we will have a stand promoting and providing information about our libraries and services.
    • Themed fortnights: Later in the term are a series of themed fortnights, as part of which we will be co-ordinating some library-related events and communications.
  • Student ambassadors: Look out for students in bright blue t-shirts in the first few weeks of term, who will be welcoming, directing, advising and touring new students on the Bloomsbury and UCL East campuses.

What’s happening at UCL East?

UCL East students will have their own local induction activities, including a UCL 101 event and Support Services Fair, at UCL East, but will also be encouraged to come to Bloomsbury, such as to collect their ID card. In addition, library staff will be welcoming students to the new library space at One Pool Street, with staff on hand to meet and greet, provide information and answer questions.

What about other library induction activities and information?

In addition to the UCL 101 event and Support Services fair, students can find out more about library services and resources by:

  • taking a look at our Getting Started webpages, including the online library induction and self-guided library tours;
  • dropping in at our ‘Getting Started’ space in Main and Science libraries during induction week;
  • attending Explore demos in the Science library at 12.00 or 12.30 every day during induction week;
  • picking up a folded library map guide, revised and updated for 2022 with ‘Getting started’ information on the reverse side (More information on requesting these map guides will follow from Simon Bralee);
  • engaging with tailored induction information and sessions put together by our subject specialist and site library staff (see Induction 2022 update – Tailored library inductions).

How can I get involved?

It’s not too late to volunteer to help with induction activities, centrally and at UCL East, as part of our Induction Taskforce. Complete an expression of interest or claim a slot directly in our Induction Taskforce Scheduling spreadsheet. Taskforce briefings will be held:

  • Friday 16 September 14.00-14.50 (online)
  • Monday 19 September 10.00-10.50 (online)
  • Tuesday 20 September 14.00-14.50 (face to face, Room 417, Science Library)

Please contact Angela Young for more information or to attend a briefing.
