A biopolitics of the future; or, The monster at the door

By Ayse Gur Geden, on 7 May 2020

The virus has been brought under control in some parts of the world. In the process, its become a familiar monster. It has also been represented, captured in discourse and through media practices of framing, as a monster, something completely other. The monster metaphor is the habituated matrix of intelligibility for the Absolute Other in societies of socialised Disney; the merciless swarm, the terrorist attacker, an unseen enemy, a ‘mugger’ (Boris Johnson’s racist word of choice), or an aleatory and hence risky trans-species leap—all these metaphors are on their way to becoming different flavoured superhero franchises for Marvel or DC, but they also have one other thing in common: the Monstrosity of the Future.

Call for Proposals & New Seminar Format

By Ayse Gur Geden, on 1 October 2019

Proposals needed

We would like to invite all of you to consider presenting your work, sharing some data or proposing a reading that you think would be of interest to the group. Alternatively, perhaps you have a conference coming up or a paper that you are preparing for submission: the seminar group is an open, informal setting and it’s great to hear about the diversity of work in the department.

If you would like to propose/present a session, please just drop us a line with a seminar title and a very short abstract. We will be sharing the programme with the department, i.e. on our blog and via our JISCMAIL account, in the hope of attracting interest and collaboration.

Changes to format

As there are a number of doctoral reading groups starting this term, many of which we know will be of interest but currently clash with this group, we have decided to run the CCM seminars at the same time (1-2pm), on the same day (Tuesdays), but on a fortnightly basis.
