Trials and funding for new eresources

New eresource purchases

Although Library Services has no extra funding available for new eresources as a matter of course, bids are submitted to College annually, every January, for new funds to support additional databases, ejournals and ebooks.  Library Services maintains a wish list of eresources that have been assessed and designated as priorities for purchase if funding becomes available.  This list informs our bids for additional funding.

Assessment and trials of eresources

When a new eresource becomes available or is recommended, the relevant subject librarians consider the content and scope of the resource and come to a decision on its usefulness and suitability (taking into account research and teaching needs, and other resources currently available through Library Services.)

One of the best ways to evaluate the content and functionality of a potential new eresource, especially a database or an ebook, is by having a trial.  Trials of new eresources are organised centrally, via Library Services’ eresources staff, upon requests from subject librarians.

Feedback on trials from potential users is very important in deciding whether to add an eresource to the wish list, and in allocating funds.   In the trials section of this blog you will find information about which eresources are currently on trial, and links for sending feedback.   There is also a previous trials section that contains information about the outcome of trials that Library Services has arranged in the past.

If you would like to suggest a new eresource, please contact the subject librarian for your department.
