Off-site access to JSTOR

By Catherine Sharp, on 25 February 2010

UCL Library Services is currently investigating problems with the JSTOR site that are preventing UCL users from logging in off-site.

Until these problems are resolved, please use the databases list for access.  If you see a security certificate error, select the option to proceed.

Access is also available via Web WTS.

Problems with SFX in Internet Explorer 8

By Lesley A Rogers, on 28 January 2010

Users of Internet Explorer 8 may currently find that they are unable to access full-text via the “go” links in SFX menus.  Instead, the message “error on page” appears at the bottom left of the SFX screen, and the “go” links do not function.

If you are not sure which version of Internet Explorer you are using, click on Help, then “about Internet Explorer”.  If the same problem occurs in a different browser, or a different version of Internet Explorer, please report it to ejournals@ucl.ac.uk

SFX’s suppliers are investigating this problem, which affects all institutions that use SFX.  In the meantime, please use a different browser (Firefox, for instance) to access eresources.  If you wish to continue using Internet Explorer, please note that Internet Explorer 6 is available on web WTS.

Access to Web of Knowledge

By Lesley A Rogers, on 6 August 2009

Some users may be experiencing difficulty accessing Web of Knowledge (or Web of Science) since the end of UCL Athens.  If you are still being prompted to log in via Athens to the Web of Knowledge, please delete cookies from your web browser and try again.

If you wish, you can just delete cookies relating to this problem.  Look for cookies named ISI, Web of Knowledge (WoK), or Athens for deletion.

To find out how to delete cookies, view the Help menu in your web browser, as the method varies between different versions of different browsers or try this website on deleting cookies.

Access to eresources

By Catherine Sharp, on 1 August 2009

UCL now no longer uses the Athens login for access to electronic resources. You may still see links labelled “Athens login” on various resources, but UCL users must take a different route to log in. Why has this changed?

UCL users are advised to access resources through the lists of ejournals and databases available on MetaLib. This will guarantee that you get free access to all the resources to which you are entitled as a member of UCL. If you are on-site you will not need to log in to resources. If you are off-site, you will be prompted for your UCL userid and password automatically (no cookies are required, unlike Athens).

If you use another route to reach an electronic resource to which UCL subscribes, in many cases you will be able to use a new institutional login method.  Follow these instructions:  Logging in on a resource’s homepage.  A few resources do not use this new institutional login. For these, you should use the links in the lists of databases and ejournals in MetaLib, or the links on the page of instructions for specific resources.

MetaLib outage

By Catherine Sharp, on 15 July 2009

MetaLib will be unavailable between 0800 and 1200 on Wednesday 22 July, because of essential system maintenance. During this period, alternative sets of links to electronic journals and databases will be provided.

The walk-in service, for Library users other than UCL students and staff, will also be unavailable.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Searching Scopus from Papers

By Catherine Sharp, on 25 June 2009

Mac users who find Papers by Mekentosj helpful for viewing and organising PDFs may already be aware that it is possible to search some academic databases directly from Papers. Databases that can be searched in this way include PubMed and Scopus.

A search engine plugin supplied with Papers enables you to search Scopus from Papers when you are on-site at UCL.  The first time you try to use the plugin you will be prompted to provide UCL’s Scopus account ID:

Scopus plugin

You will find UCL’s Scopus account ID on Library Services’ passwords page.

Once you have configured the Scopus plugin by entering the account ID, you will be able to search Scopus from the Papers application while at UCL.

“At risk” period for UCL e-resource login

By Catherine Sharp, on 7 May 2009

The login system for UCL electronic library resources will be “at risk” between 0800 and 0900 on Tuesday 12 May.  There may be brief periods during this time when the login is unavailable.  If this occurs, please try the login again after a short pause.  If you are still unable to login, you can use WTS on the web, which simulates on-site access to e-resources, without further login.

Off-site access to JSTOR

By Catherine Sharp, on 24 April 2009

Access to JSTOR from outside the UCL network is no longer available via Athens.  We have instead moved to a new login mechanism which will be in place for most resources from August 2009.  There are two options to access JSTOR off-site (please note that if you wish to login in to a personal account you have created on JSTOR, you must use the second option):

1.  Follow the link in the databases list (under “J” for JSTOR) or to individual journals from the ejournals list.  Enter your UCL userid and password when prompted.

2.  From the JSTOR homepage, click on Login at the top right of the screen (you might need to scroll across to find it.)  Scroll down to the bottom section.  Do not select the Athens login link.  Instead, in the section Access JSTOR through a participating institution, select UCL (University College London) from the list of institutions (see the example below.)  Enter your UCL userid and password when prompted.

Access to Justis

By Catherine Sharp, on 6 March 2009

From Monday 16 March, the login for UCL users to law resources available through Justis will change.  This covers Daily Cases, English Reports, State Trials and Weekly Law Reports.

The links for these resources in the A-Z databases list will still request your UCL userid and password, but behind the scenes they will no longer be using the Athens login, but a new “home institution” login from the UK Access Management Federation.

If you have not saved any searches or documents within Justis, you should see almost no change.  If you have saved any searches or documents, these will unfortunately *not* be transferred to the new login.  If you wish, you can transfer them manually.  Click “Read the full post” for information about this. SFX links in Google Scholar

By Catherine Sharp, on 5 March 2009

scholar.gifGoogle Scholar can display SFX links that show whether articles are available to UCL users.  As in other databases, the SFX links indicate if an article is available electronically via UCL’s subscriptions (or freely), and also allow you to search the UCL Library catalogue (and other catalogues) for print.  A large link, labelled “SFX@UCL – Fulltext” will appear if UCL has the item electronically. A smaller link, labelled simply “SFX@UCL”, below the citation, indicates that UCL may have the item in print.

The easiest way to see UCL’s SFX links in Google Scholar is to use the link to Google Scholar in the A-Z databases list.  (An alternative is to set UCL in your Scholar Preferences.)

Please note that Google Scholar can no longer be searched alongside other resources in MetaLib:  Google no longer permits this.
