Area Studies: China and Southeast Asia is a primary source database which features a varied array of records of traders, travellers, missionaries and diplomats, from the mid-seventeenth century to the late twentieth century, offering Western perspectives on all aspects of Chinese culture and society.

Highlights include:

  • British government records covering economic development in China and its neighbours, 1950-1980
  • Correspondence from the Macartney Embassy, the first British diplomatic mission to China, 1892-94
  • The diaries, notebooks and published writings of Rewi Alley (1897-1987), New Zealand educator and industrial organiser in communist China

Nineteenth Century US Newspapers provides access to primary source newspaper content from the 19th century, featuring full-text content and images from numerous newspapers from a range of urban and rural regions throughout the U.S. The collection encompasses the entire 19th century, with an emphasis on such topics as the American Civil War, African-American culture and history, Western migration and Antebellum-era life, among other subjects.

The collection is of particular importance to those studying the history of the book as well as publishing history, the history of copyright and the workings of an early London Livery Company.
