The Grand Challenges Research Summer School is returning for its third year, from 31 May to 2 June 2016. This three-day course is perfect for UCL research students who want to learn more about cross-disciplinary research, funding opportunities and engaging with policy makers.

The final programme for 2016 is currently being developed and will be confirmed soon. Last year’s programme included:

• The academic discussion of cross-disciplinarity

• The EU research agenda
• Presentations about cross-disciplinary research projects in 2015 included:
  • Doing video-ethnographic research in the operating theatre

  • Black geographies and public histories

Part of the UCL Grand Challenges Research Summer School is hearing about UCL researchers who have successsfully carried out their own cross-disciplinary research projects.

The 2015 summer school included contributions from the Geography, Pharmacy, The Institute of Education, The Bartlett School of Architecture, The Development Planning Unit and the Centre for Behaviour Change.

Students at the summer school heard how video ethnography can be used to study decsion making by surgeons, why an understanding of human behaviour is essential to make organisations more environmentally sustainable and how our understanding of suburbs can be enriched by taking multiple disciplinary approaches.

The draft Grand Challenges Research Summer School Programme includes presentations on cross-disciplinary working, an overview of research councils and how to create impact through your research.

Gain experience in preparing cross-disciplinary research proposals and hear from researchers on their experience of working with different disciplines.

The deadline for applications to the 2015 Summer School has been extended. You now have until 27 April to apply for a place.
