Amy De’Ath (MA Publishing 2009) is about to leave her role as Junior Digital Editor at Andersen Press to study for a PhD at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, where she has won a 4-year scholarship. She will be researching contemporary feminist poetry and philosophy. Amy’s first collection of poetry, Erec & Enide was published by Salt Publishing last year (cover image left).

MA LIS student Jennifer Howard has had an article published in the latest issue of Catalogue & Index, the main practitioner journal for cataloguing in the UK:

Given the topic, it may be of interest to students enrolling for this year’s MA LIS, alongside Genny Grim’s and Sarah Maule’s accounts in Catalogue & Index 162.

The current year’s issues of Catalogue & Index can be accessed online by members of Cilip’s Cataloguing and Indexing Group. (Previous years are open access). UCL subscribes to Catalogue & Index, and registered users can access issues from 1998 to date via the UCL ejournals service.

Sarah Anderson (MA LIS 2010) has been appointed as a Metadata Librarian at Warwick University, where she will be working mainly on the institutional repository. She will be relocating from Cambridge, where she worked while studying for her Masters part-time.

This weekend sees the start of the Special Libraries Association Conference in Philadelphia. This year two of the four Early Career Conference Awards have been presented to UCL Alumni, Chris Cooper and Natalia Madjarevic (both MA LIS 2009). Thomas Meehan (MA LIS, 2000) is one of the speakers at CILIP’s Executive
Briefing on new cataloguing standard RDA in Manchester.

Thomas studied at the then School of Library, Archive and Information
Studies (now Department of Information Studies) while working full-time for UCL Library Services. He now heads up the current cataloguing team
there, and gives occasional guest lectures to students on the MA LIS
core module Cataloguing and Classification.

Jennie Courage (MA Publishing 2009), now working at OUP, has been awarded the first ever UK Association for Publishing Education Prize for her Masters dissertation,  ‘Making e-books easy for everyone to read: accessibility and the visually impaired.’

Mei Yau Kan (MA LIS 2009), has been awarded the E.T. Bryant Memorial Prize by the International Association of Music Libraries for ‘Double standards: the role and value of music and film in the public library’. This is the third award in recent years to a MA LIS student, Previous winners include Michael Summers (2006, for ‘Pop music in British libraries’), and Amelie Roper (2005, for ‘The trade in music publications at the Frankfurt Book Fair in the late sixteenth century: a study of the book fair catalogues of Georg Willer).
