New in UCL Moodle: Double Marking, Candidate Numbers & the Assessment Creation Wizard
By Eliot Hoving, on 6 February 2026
The Digital Learning Environment (DLE) team is excited to announce the release of three major digital assessment features in UCL Moodle:
- Coursework double marking activity
- Candidate Numbers in Moodle
- Assessment Creation Wizard
Coursework double marking activity
The Coursework Moodle activity supports fully independent double marking directly in Moodle, including:
- Blind and open double marking workflows
- Complete marking history for audit and external examiner review
- Third‑marker support where agreement cannot be reached
Coursework can be used for any written assessments, such as essays, reports, dissertations, and research proposals.
To reduce workload while maintaining academic judgement, Coursework includes a series of automations and time saving features:
- Suggested final marks when first and second marks fall within UCL classification boundaries
- Side‑by‑side feedback comparisons
- Feedback for all (cohort‑wide) feedback release
- Flexible marker allocation (manual, spreadsheet upload, or automatic distribution)
The DLE team are developing further enhancements to the marking capabilities of Coursework and Moodle assignment to improve marking and student feedback.
Candidate Numbers in Moodle
Coursework student names and file submission names can be automatically anonymised using UCL Candidate numbers. Students no longer need to do this manually, and staff no longer need to keep seperate records of which Moodle identifier matches which student candidate number.
Coursework also works with the Moodle Feedback tracker, SITS mark transfer and automated extensions.
Assessment Creation Wizard
Setting up digital assessments can be complex, requiring many settings to be configured to get the intended workflow. The new Assessment Creation Wizard simplifies assessment setup by offering predefined templates.
Staff can select a template, such as blind double marking or open double marking, and the Wizard automatically configures the settings of the assessment. The Wizard then guides users through adding and allocating markers ensuring that when markers login they see exactly the submissions they need to mark.
Currently the Wizard only works with the Coursework activity. Future iterations will expand support for additional assessment templates.
