The Annual Engineering Summer Expo returns on Friday 10th June from 12:30pm-2:45pm. As one of the largest Faculty-run events for Engineering students, we anticipate even more employers exhibiting and offering a wide range of opportunities this year. Open to all years, it’s the perfect time to showcase current or future positions, or perhaps simply highlight your work and raise your profile on campus. It’s free of charge to exhibit, but sponsorship packages are also available for further promotional activities on the day. If you would like to find out more, or to exhibit at this year’s Expo, please contact Mala Mohindru at m.mohindru@ucl.ac.uk or Olivia Hynes at o.hynes@ucl.ac.uk.

The UCL Jobs Market will be held on Wednesday 8th June during the afternoon, and will last for around 2.5 hours. This will be promoted to students from ALL degree disciplines, so you should expect to see a wide range of students, and we hope to equal or exceed last year’s numbers- around 400. The event is free for organisations to attend- all we ask is that you are able to showcase an immediate vacancy for either graduates or undergraduates that meet National Minimum Wage, or that you operate rolling graduate recruitment. Space is limited, meaning we will provide you with a small table top to display literature and promotional items, but there is not space for “Nomadic” or pop up display stands. You may bring a small roll up banner if you wish. Please email Pat Molloy at careers.events@ucl.ac.uk

Summer opportunities with UCL Careers

By UCL Careers, on 16 April 2014

Are you looking for ways to engage with UCL Careers over this summer?

We have several exciting opportunities for employers to get involved on campus that are still available for booking:

UCL Employability Summer School

The brand-new UCL Global Citizenship Programme features UCL Careers running an intensive and varied Employability Summer School between June 2nd and 13th, including employer-led events, to help prepare students for life beyond university by putting them through their paces with employability skills. This is an opportunity to meet and engage with a large number of motivated, talented students willing to put in two week’s of non-obligatory work. For more information on individual events, please email Weronika Benning: w.benning@ucl.ac.uk

UCL Advances are running workshops on May 22nd, 29th, and June 6th for upcoming summer internships, focusing on the difference between how students manage their academic studies and how they then operate in the workplace.  This can be a difficult transition and we welcome employers to help run these sessions on how to be better prepared. Students will learn about behaviours and attitudes, etiquette, confidence, and communication.  For more information email Weronika Benning at w.benning@ucl.ac.uk

UCL Jobs Market is taking place on the afternoon of 9th June 2014. This is a table top recruitment event for c400 graduating UCL students from all degree backgrounds, to meet a wide range of employers with immediate vacancies, or who offer rolling graduate recruitment. The event is free for employers to attend, but space is limited- please email phil.howe@ucl.ac.uk by Friday 23rd May if you are keen to attend.

‘The Small Companies Big Jobs Fair’, Tuesday June 3rd: UCL Management Science & Innovation in partnership with UCL Careers, UCL Advances, Silicone Milkroundabout, FATJIL and the National Association of Colleges & University Entrepreneurs (NACUE). Companies from an array of sectors are welcome to attend to offer internships, placement and job opportunities covering marketing, advertising, web development, digital music and production to name a few. If you are an SME/Start-Up and would be interested in finding out more, contact carol.morgan@ucl.ac.uk .

UCL Talent Bank is a new fast tracking service which connects UCL students and graduates to a broad range of employers, including UCL Alumni. We will actively source opportunities for UCL students and present CV’s to employers. Contact Lizzy McKinney for further information: talentbank@ucl.ac.uk

Need an intern this summer?  If you would like to host an intern from UCL’s new Arts & Sciences BASc course this summer, we would love to hear from you.  The BASc students have good research and language skills and are available for a minimum of 6 weeks from mid June. Contact Charlotte c.turnbull@ucl.ac.uk for more details.

Focus on Management: 11th– 12th June 2014. This is an opportunity to allow new or aspiring managers to gain experience and coaching in managing people, by being a Team Manager of their own team of UCL students for two days. They will be observed by an experienced coach who will give them support and feedback on their managerial style. It would also offer a great deal of publicity to your organisation. Contact Vivienne Watson at v.watson@ucl.ac.uk for more information.

We are also looking for an employer to deliver a case study as part of this course. Focus on Management is a 3-day course, in which teams of pre-selected students take part in employer-led case studies. The course gives the students the opportunity to develop their commercial awareness, team working and presentation skills, whilst gaining an insight into management. For more information, please contact Trevor Bibic (t.bibic@ucl.ac.uk) or Natasha Weller (n.weller@ucl.ac.uk) by 16th May.

UCL Engineering Summer Expo, Wednesday 11th June. The largest employer event for the Faculty of Engineering: employers are encouraged to promote any current or upcoming opportunities, be on hand to answer questions and enjoy a catered networking area. There is also the chance to deliver seminars or bespoke workshops as part of the event programme. Attracting students across all Engineering disciplines and years, this event is not to be missed! For more information contact Mala Mohindru at m.mohindru@ucl.ac.uk

We are looking for representatives who have a PhD to speak to researchers at both events. To find out more please contact Vivienne Watson at v.watson@ucl.ac.uk.

UCL Careers Employer Engagement Team- What’s New?

By Phil Howe, on 14 February 2014

Welcome to the first update from UCL Careers’ Employer Engagement Team! We’ll be using this blog to share stories from UCL with graduate recruiters, as well as anything else that catches our eye. We hope you enjoy it!

UCL Careers Service becomes UCL Careers
You may already have noticed but last term we changed our name to UCL Careers, as part of a brand overhaul. The new name, look and feel were developed through student, employer and staff focus groups, and the new visual identify was created by ThirtyThree. Our team name has also changed to Employer Engagement to reflect the wider range of services we now offer employers.

Placements & Vacancies Team
2013 also saw us create our Placements & Vacancies team. They will be sourcing the mandatory placements for our BASc undergraduates and BBSRC funded PhD students, as well as developing UCL Talent Bank– our new shortlisting service. The new team comprises Rochelle Symons (Manager), Charlotte Turnbull and Lizzy McKinney and they would love to hear from any employers keen to offer 3 month (or similar) placements or internships via careers.internships@ucl.ac.uk.

Comings and Goings
Vivienne Watson joined us in the Autumn to look after our employer- led skills programme for research students, but sadly Natalia Mazzini-Cea (Events Administrator) and Natalie Sibley (Employer Engagement in Engineering) moved on to new roles- in Natalie’s case in Canada! We are well underway recruiting their replacements and will update you soon. Weronika Benning, who was interning with the team last term, has happily been able to stay on to cover our Skills4Work programme and Engineering events.

50 years young!
UCL Careers celebrates its 50th birthday this year! We have exciting plans for a website, anniversary publication and a time capsule! We’d also love to hear from employers who can tell us how our alumni have developed their careers at your organisation over the last 50 years. Email us at careers.events@ucl.ac.uk.

Summer School
UCL are holding a Global Citizenship programme from 2nd-13th June 2014, and UCL Careers are running the Employability stream. We will be working with up to 200 students over the 2 weeks and will be looking for employers to get involved in a variety of ways- CV and interview coaching, sending alumni to take part in panel discussions and showcasing immediate start vacancies at the Jobs Market event. Let us know if you’d like to contribute by emailing careers.events@ucl.ac.uk.

Sprint
January 2014 saw us collaborate with RBS to bring their Sprint programme for female undergraduates and graduates to UCL. 50 women attended and their feedback showed improved confidence job hunting, expanded professional and personal networks and the identification of appropriate industry mentors. We will be reviewing the programme with RBS but are keen to run more events of this kind.

Fair and presentation bookings now open!
Autumn 2014 seems a long way off- we’re all hoping for a summer first- but we are already taking provisional bookings for our 5 Careers Fairs and our on and off campus presentations programme. To make a booking, or check date clashes do get in touch with us at careers.events@ucl.ac.uk.
