Knowledge Africa: Join us to celebrate UCL’s work in the region

Audience members pose questions to the panel at the African Voices 'Question Time' eventThe Africa & Middle East Regional Network is excited to be hosting its first “Knowledge Africa” event, to celebrate UCL’s work in the area.

Taking place on Thursday 16 June, the event will cover topics ranging from UCL’s frontline stance in the fight against HIV to connecting East African households to electricity supplies.

There will be the opportunity to find out more about different initiatives and opportunities through a series of presentations and a photo exhibition. Students are also encouraged to take part by submitting a poster illustrating their work for display on the day.

Knowledge Africa was established following feedback from members of the Africa & Middle East Regional Network, which meets once a term, who wanted to find a new way to engage colleagues from across the university in the latest initiatives.

Ijeoma Uchegbu, Pro-Vice-Provost for Africa & the Middle East, said: “UCL has a great range of collaborations underway with partners across the continent and we’re really looking forward to bringing together academics and students to showcase these and celebrate their work.”

Santander Universities W30 and W50 programmes for UCL staff

Applications are open to UCL staff for a range of programmes supported by Santander Universities:

W30 Programme

 The 2016 edition of the W30 Programme is organized by the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The program will take place from June 27 to June 30, 2016.

The W30 Program was launched in 2013 and has more than 90 alumnae from universities belonging to the Santander network.

W30 is designed to prepare women currently in university faculty and administration for leadership positions of increasing responsibility within higher education. More details about the program can be found here.

W30 candidates should go to the website and complete an online application.

W50 Programme

The 2016 edition of the W50 Programme is organized by the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The program will take place from June 26 to July 1, 2016.

UCLA’s highly successful W50 Program was launched in 2011 and has more than 270 alumnae from universities belonging to the Santander network.

W50 is designed for women — between 35-40 years old — who exhibit strong leadership skills, high professional potential and will become the next generation of global women leaders as board members. More details about the program can be found here.

W50 candidates should go to website and complete an online application.

Application deadlines and requirements for W30 and W50 Programmes

The deadline for applications for both Programme is March 15, 2016.

English proficiency is required.

Due to the strong interest in this program, admittance is highly selective. UCLA Anderson handles the selection process and will directly contact all applicants with their decision.

The programmes include tuition costs, programme materials and accommodation. Travel costs are excluded. Participants will stay at a hotel near campus. Details will be sent to participants once they have been admitted to the program.

 

Globalization TrendLab 2016

The 2016 edition of the Globalization TrendLab 2016 is entitled, “Water: Scarcity, Excess, and the Geopolitics of Allocation.” The programme is presented by The Lauder Institute, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and supported by Santander Universities US. The program will take place on March 21-24, 2016. The working language is English.

The Lauder Institute invites applications from faculty and researchers affiliated with the global network of Santander Universities for a four-day workshop and conference. The Globalization TrendLab at the Lauder Institute and The Wharton School seeks to generate new knowledge and analysis on the problems and opportunities inherent to a global economy through annual academic conferences linking highly respected global scholars and practitioners. The sixth workshop and conference will focus on the theme of Water: Scarcity, Excess, and the Geopolitics of Allocation.

Accommodation and select meals will be covered for participants. Further information regarding accommodations will be provided upon admission notification to the conference. Participants are responsible for all travel expenses to/from Philadelphia.

The application deadline is February 1, 2016.

Special seminar: Funding system and current situation on Life Science Research in Japan

Professor Hiroshi Kagami from Shinsu University, who is also Programme Officer of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), will visit UCL on Monday 9 November, 4pm, to present, “Funding system and current situation on Life Science Research in Japan.”

The event is an informal seminar which will be of relevance to those interested in funding systems and/or establishing collaborations with Japan.

Chilean Economy: challenges ahead

The Minister’s visit to UCL takes place in the context of Chile Day 2015, which is organised by Chilean Ministry of Finance and INBEST Chile. It seeks to promote Chile abroad as a highly attractive country for investment and as a financial fund management platform for Latin America and emerging markets as well as strengthening ties between Chilean local capital markets and its global partners.

XIII Symposium of Mexican Students and Studies

UCL will host of the XIII Symposium of Mexican Students and Studies 2015: “Connecting Ideas, Building the Future”. This event will take place during the summer, from 23-25 July.

Organised by the UCLU Mexican Society, there will be a number of parallel sessions for students as well as lectures by recognised researchers in topics related to science, technology, public health, environment, human rights, politics, and arts and humanities in Mexico.

The Governments of the UK and Mexico decided to celebrate 2015 as the dual Year of Mexico in the UK/Year of the UK in Mexico. Followed by the visit of the Prince of Wales to Mexico, this event will be the academic peak of the Dual Year in an open, plural, and critic environment to discuss the main concerns of the Mexican population.

All students from any nationality whose research is about Mexican studies are warmly invited to apply in this unique opportunity to network with their peers. The call for papers will be published in due course.

Erasmus Week, 7-11 July 2014

The Office of International Affairs (OfIA) and UCL Psychology and Language Sciences (PALS) host UCL’s 2nd Erasmus Week programme.

Building on the successful programme in 2013, where over 20 participants attended from all over Europe, UCL have welcomed staff from Erasmus Partner Universities to participate in an exciting event this week.

The programme enables participants to exchange ideas about fostering student and staff mobility, to present their home universities and meet with relevant academic departments to explore and discuss special topics of interest.

With a special focus on English Language for non-native speakers, presentations and workshops have explored pronunciation, preparing online courses and presentation skills.

Participants also had an opportunity to share best practice in areas of Continuing Professional Development Learning and Distant/Digital Learning aimed at Professional Services in Higher Education.

Moving away from the classroom, the schedule will include a tour of UCL’s famous campus and the history of its buildings, as well as an insight into the Jeremy Bentham project and a cultural day out in London.

Participants will be awarded with a Certificate of Participation by Nigel Percival, Director, Office for International Affairs on Friday 11 July.

UCL-Institut Francais call for applications for workshop funding

UCL academics, including doctoral (PhD) students and postdoctoral researchers, are invited to apply for funds to help organise collaborative workshops for the 2014-2015 academic year involving participants from UCL and research institutions in France.

In July 2013, UCL and the Institut Français signed an agreement to collaborate on a series of workshops over a period of three years, focusing specifically on research in the humanities.

The agreement aims to build on existing, and explore new links, between UCL and French academic and research organisations.

By providing funding each year for three workshops between UCL and French academics, all held at UCL, the agreement is aimed at encouraging junior and senior scholars to establish new directions for possible research collaborations– not only in their own areas of expertise, but also across disciplines.

During the 2013-2014 academic year, the UCL European Institute organised three highly successful workshops under the theme of ‘In Places(s) of Memory’
