Camden Council has invited UCL to develop a series of workshops that study the children’s relationship with cycling and their local environment. The workshops will be undertaken with local schools and community groups and will take the form of drawing, map-making, and the development of a simple scaled 3d ‘stage set’ of Somers Town that the children can walk or ride through.

The activities have been designed to establish which areas of their environment make the children feel happy, which areas make them uneasy, which local landmarks they use to navigate and what their relationship is with their bikes and the family and friends with whom they undertake their journeys.

The value of the project lies in gaining a greater understanding of how the children of Somers Town feel about their environment, enabling Camden to make informed decisions about the Cycle to School program and urban infrastructure. It is also anticipated that the results and methodologies developed in this location could be developed for other local community groups and councils who may wish to undertake similar studies.
