Workshop Tools

Landmark Models

Key to the childrens’ workshops are the development of tools which are not only educational, but also fun and engaging for children and parents alike. The central focus of the workshops has been the design and construction of a series of 10 scale-models of landmark buildings from Somers Town. Including participating schools, heritage buildings, and community spaces, the models form a vital component of the research activities of the workshops, but have also created a talking point for the project, creating great interest when they have been used in a public setting.

Miniatures

With the landmark models attracting such positive attention, we wanted to create something smaller and more personal the we could offer the children who take part in our workshops. Designed and constructed within the Bartlett facilities by Adriana Cabrello, the miniatures can be made into brooches or fridge magnets, and will have the childrens’ names laser-cut into the object as an additional personalisation. We also anticipate that a workshop could be developed to introduce laser-cutting and design techniques to older children in the community.

Designed to explore the way the children recognise and navigate urban space, the ‘Bingo’ card shows images of well-known streets, corners, shops and landmarks inSomers Town. The children will have to talk with each other to find someone who passes each place on their card on the way to school. They will also ask if he/she likes or dislikes it and record their answer with a green or red sticker. The first child to complete their card with different names shouts ‘Bingo!’
