Online Film Evening: Run Lola Run (26 May 2020)

By Christine E Sas, on 22 May 2020

Run Lola RunDear colleagues,

We hope you are keeping safe and well as far as possible. We’re writing to let you know of a new idea, which is to create a regular online film viewing for / with students.  Dutch Studies initiated a weekly film evening in term 3 and are now joining forces with German, whilst hoping this could become an all-SELCS/CMII event in the weeks to come, provisionally up to the end of Term 3, if students take it up. The aim is, rather like the SELCS Summer Book Club which is such a great idea, to see if this is something via which we can continue to engage and keep in touch with our students (for my own part I am hoping to learn lots too 😊).

Here’s the plan: We will get together (virtually) for a pre-film chat on Teams every Tuesday at 5pm, watch a film from one of our language areas (with English subtitles) in real time, then join the Team again for a post-talk. Discussion will be in English. Participants can of course watch the film whenever it suits them, and join for the discussion as they wish. The link to the Team is here, or please let us know if you’d like to join:

The organisers will advertise details of the film on the Friday before – this can be done via the SELCS blog on the website once that is functional, and via an all-selcs email in the meantime.

Next week (Tue 26 May, 5pm on Teams) we plan to start off with a viewing of Tom Tykwer’s German hit thriller Run Lola Run (1998), which you can view on BoB.

Please join us if you can, either regularly or occasionally. And do let us know if you have an idea for a film and you are happy to provide a brief introduction and chat about it after the viewing (films would need to be easily available with sub-titles via e.g. BoB, Kanopy or CLIE).

Importantly too, please would you let all your students know about this initiative via your Moodles, or whichever methods you are currently using to keep in touch? There’s a brief invitation for students below which you could use if you liked. This would be great as we are aware we have missed the student newsletters for this week.

Looking forward to a term of multilingual viewing!

All the best,

Christine and Mererid
