Spotlight on… BSc Security and Crime Science
By Helen Anderson, on 5 January 2016
UCL Security & Crime Science is the first university department in the world devoted specifically to reducing crime and other risks to personal and national security. It focuses on finding new ways to reduce crime and security problems by thinking about them in a scientific way, and by bringing disciplines together from across the social and physical sciences.
The department works directly with policymakers, police and related agencies to deal with new and emerging crime and security threats and develop creative and ethical ways to increase security in a changing world.
What will I study?
Our new BSc Security and Crime Science is organised along four strands: Crime Theories, Analytical Techniques, Crime and Practice, and Project-based learning.
It will equip you with specialist knowledge about crime, intelligence and forensics, as well as transferable skills in statistics, pattern analysis, systems design and project management. Each term, you will apply your skills to examine crimes such as terrorism and cybercrime, and develop effective strategies to prevent them. In the final year you can explore the multi-disciplinary nature of crime analysis, detection and prevention in more detail during a six-month project.
Where does it lead?
Security and Crime Science students will develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills that will enhance employability in this constantly changing area. Graduates will be well place to progress in careers in the following sectors:
– ‘Front line’ jobs in policing, probation, crime analysis, and youth work for police services and local councils
– Research and policy positions in government, NGOs, regulatory agencies, research units and higher education institutions
– Private sector roles in security, forensic services, fraud analysis and data science for a wide range of private companies.
