Spotlight on… BSc Population Health

By Hannah Searle, on 4 November 2015

What is it about?

Population health studies the factors that shape our health – the social and physical environment, the way we behave, medical care systems and our genes – and what we can do about them. It spans the life course, from childbirth to old age, and asks two key questions: how do we keep people healthier for longer and how do we ensure that health gains are shared fairly in the UK and across the world?

This newly designed programme will ground you in the different social science disciplines used to study population health, and will prepare you for research and professional practice in the health sector and beyond.

What will I study?

World leading researchers and clinical staff working in the NHS will teach you about the social, economic and demographic distribution of health and disease. You will learn cutting edge data analysis skills, delivered by the UCL Q-Step centre, which are in high demand by employers in the health sector and beyond. Complimenting this, you will also learn the theory, history and policy of population health creating a unique multidisciplinary educational experience.

Students will benefit from the opportunity to explore and discuss ideas through small group problem-based teaching and hands-on computer practical classes. You will also be able to take advantage of paid internship opportunities with our partner employers.

Where does it lead?

Population health graduates will be empowered with the knowledge and skills to anticipate and address the social, economic and healthcare needs of the future from the local to the global.

Our graduates will be well placed to progress in careers in public health, policy, private consultancy and the voluntary sector, as well as to undertake postgraduate study.
