Panopto recordings inaccessible on Read-Only Moodle course instances

By Pauline Harding, on 5 February 2026

Moodle users may be unable to access the Panopto recordings of courses that are set to Read-Only.  Panopto assigns the Viewer role to everyone on a Read-Only Moodle course.  Therefore, if recordings have not been made available to students, Course Administrators and Tutors will also be unable to view these.

Information to make Panopto recordings available on Read-Only Moodle courses is available on the Panopto Resource Centre within the guide titled
How read-only Moodle pages work with Panopto

Once recordings have been made available to students, you can revert the Moodle course back to Read-Only mode (via the ‘More’ menu and ‘Make Course Read-Only’ option).

We strongly recommend re-instating the course’s Read-Only mode to avoid potential data loss within your Moodle courses.
