Progress update, 25 to 31 July 2015

By Tim Causer, on 31 July 2015

Welcome along to the progress update for the period 25 to 31 July 2015, during which time further excellent progress has been made by Transcribe Bentham volunteers. As the project’s fifth birthday approaches in September, we are well on the way to having our 14,000th transcript worked on!

13,452 manuscripts have now been transcribed or partially-transcribed, which is an increase of 60 on last week’s total. Of these transcripts, 12,639 (94%) have now been checked and approved by TB staff. (We’ve been continuing to work through the body of partially-transcribed manuscripts, and others we may have missed in the past, which accounts for the increased approval rate).

Eagle-eyed transcribers will have noticed that this week we uploaded a new batch of material to the Transcription Desk. You can now transcribe more manuscripts from the British Library’s Bentham Papers, namely Additional Manuscripts volume 33547. This material mainly contains Bentham’s thoughts on prize law, that is the mechanics of paying bounties to seamen for capturing foreign ships during times of war. Yet more material will be uploaded for transcription in the coming weeks – there’s certainly no shortage!

We are also delighted to say, that thanks to a UCL Grand Challenges Small Grant, a team led by DARE Collaborative, the UCL Institute for Education, DuckDuckZeus Games, UCL Centre for Digital Humanities, and the Bentham Project will be developing Panopticon Pandemonium, in which you will be able to try and run your own panopticon prison. Watch this space, as they say…

Thank you, as always, to everyone who has contributed to Transcribe Bentham during the last seven days. It remains as greatly appreciated as ever by all of us here at Bentham HQ.

    Hi Tim,
I am interested to read about the new material on JB’s views of prize law. I have just been transcribing 541/095/001 & 002, which is a letter to JB from his brother Samuel. Samuel boasts about his investing in a prize vessel, and all the money he hopes to earn from it, though he thinks the bold captain of the vessel may well lose his head. It will be interesting to see if the results of this investment affected JB’s views of prize law.

Hi Mary, many thanks for this! I hope the prize law stuff turns up something of interest – it’s always great to hear about these connections between different parts of the Bentham manuscripts. Do give us a shout if we can help with anything.

    all the best,

    Tim
