Fieldwork report: Japan and The Philippines, April 2017
By ucqnafe, on 6 March 2017
During April, project lead Dr Rocio Carrero and DPA candidate Asaf Tzachor visited Japan and The Philippines to conduct field work. In Japan, they visited Tokyo and Sendai (the area affected by the 2011 Tohoku tsunami and earthquake), before flying to Manila and Quezon City in The Philippines.
Whilst in Quezon City they gained rare access to Payatas, the largest dumpsite in the country, which has over 500,000 estimated inhabitants (pictured above). The team visited the site to explore the challenges confronting disaster preparedness in areas of extreme poverty and conduct research on the ‘trashslide’ (landslide of refuse) that occurred in 2010 as a result of heavy rain, killing hundreds of people.
