I am about to publish my article, where can I deposit my data?

Some research funders such as the EPSRC require you to make openly available (where appropriate) datasets supporting your pending publications.

UCL Discovery is a repository that can be used to make publicly accessible such small datasets underpinning your publications. It is free of charge for UCL researchers.

Where can I find UCL policies regarding research data, information security and data protection?

The UCL Research Data Policy sets out UCL’s expectations around the management and sharing of data created by UCL researchers. All UCL researchers, supervisors and Principal Investigators should read the Policy and share it with colleagues and students where relevant.

How can I comply with ESRC’s expectations on data management?

As of March 2015 ERSC-funded projects have to comply with the council’s updated Research Data Policy.

UCL guidance for ESRC-grant holders and grant applicants is available online and explains how to comply with the Economic and Social Research Council’s new expectations related to the management and accessibility of research data.

As of the 1st of May 2015 projects funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council have to comply with several new expectations related to the management and accessibility of research data.

Metadata are commonly defined as “data about other data”, i.e. a description of your data, including key information that would make them discoverable.

What is Research Data Management?

Research data are the original sources or material that you have created or collated to conduct your research project. The response to your research question is based on the analysis of these data. (Read more in our post on research data.)

Research Data Management covers all of the decisions made throughout the research lifecycle to handle these research data, from the planning stage of the project up to the long-term preservation of data.
