UCL is taking part in the second phase of a JISC Collections project to explore and evaluate potential business models for e-textbooks. This project is the second phase of the Study on the Economic Impact of e-Textbook Business Models (Phase 1 report published April 2009), and aims to implement those models put forward in the Phase 1 report.
The trials, being run on behalf of JISC Collections by Content Complete Ltd, run from the start of the academic session until the end of May 2010 and consist of 4 individual business models for licensing e-textbooks. UCL is involved in trialling 2 of the models:
Trial 1 In collaboration with Palgrave, UCL will have access to 2 Political Science titles:
Understanding International Relations / Brown; 4th ed (2009)
Theories of International Relations / Burchill; 4th ed (2009)
These titles will be accessible via MyiLibrary and we will have unlimited access to them (as we would usually). Both titles will appear in eUCLid with links to the e-version.
Trial 2 In collaboration with Cambridge University Press, we will have access to the following titles:
Introductory Econometrics for Finance / Brooks; 2nd ed (2008)
International Law / Shaw; 6th ed. 2008
These titles will be available via the EBL platform. Students will have unlimited access, but there will also be options for them to purchase a range of things, including a hard copy, the full-text as an e-book, etc. It will be made clear that access is not dependent on a purchase so there should be no confusion, but any queries can be sent to June Hedges (j.hedges@ucl.ac.uk). Both titles will appear in eUCLid with links to the e-version.
More details about the project are available at the JISC Collections site: http://www.jiscebooksproject.org/business-models
