“Zanran helps you to find ‘semi-structured’ data on the web. This is the numerical data that people have presented as graphs and tables and charts. For example, the data could be a graph in a PDF report, or a table in an Excel spreadsheet, or a barchart shown as an image in an HTML page. This huge amount of information can be difficult to find using conventional search engines, which are focused primarily on finding text rather than graphs, tables and bar charts.
Put more simply: Zanran is Google for data.”

EDaWaX is a DFG-funded project concerning data archives of scholarly journals in economics. The project now has a website (all in English), that is presented as a wordpress blog. One aim of the blog is to disseminate news and studies concerning research data management.

A list of major sources of socio-economic data available at UCL, and via the Web generally, is available from the statistics section of the Economics subject guide. It includes a summary of the data available, special access arrangements, related print holdings and time periods covered.

SSPP offers free access to US datasets on sustainability. This is an open access peer reviewed journal from Proquest. In addition to articles and news on sustainability, it now offers a free search facility to search thousands of recent United States government datasets relating to sustainability, sustainable living and public policy. The records are taken from the main data.gov catalogue. Topics covered include green living, fuels, pollution and the environment in general.

“Interesting initiative from the OECD which has created an interactive tool to allow citizens to compare well-being across 34 countries. It uses 11 dimensions including material living conditions and quality of life: housing, income, jobs, community, education, environment, governance, health, life satisfaction, safety, work-life balance.”

A new site created by the Charities Aid Foundation which provides free access to charity statistical data using sources supplied monthly from the Charity Commissioner. All registered charities in England and Wales are available to search. View charts and graphs on top charities by income, sector, expenditure and number of employees or use the online tools to generate tailored graphs on specific charities. These can then be downloaded in Excel format. Information on sources and methodology is provided on the website.

The site is the most authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political and economic organisation of the United States. Topics covered include population, elections social and political life. Tables can be downloaded free of charge from the website. An extensive collection of earlier editions is also on open access.

OpenCorporates: the Open Access Database of the Corporate World, was launched by Chris Taggart and Rob McKinnon in order to increase accountability and public information to data about companies. It provides listing of companies’ links to their websites and to public government information about them. This includes VAT registration, financial statements, UK health and safety notices, records in the UK gazette and notices of awards of government contracts. Currently data is held on over 3 million companies (mainly from the UK) but more is being added daily.
