New Subject Librarian contact for Psychology & Biosciences

Francine C Wood9 January 2015

The new year sees a temporary change of library contact for the Faculty of Biosciences and the Department of Psychology.

I have recently moved to the UCL Language & Speech Science Library as Acting Site Librarian on a temporary basis.  I am pleased to introduce Jacqui Smith, who has joined the UCL Library Biomedical Team as Subject Librarian for Psychology & Biosciences in the interim.

Jacqui may be contacted using the details below and, as always, general queries may be sent to library@ucl.ac.uk.

Please join me in welcoming Jacqui to UCL Library Services!

Are you getting organised for the year ahead?  Did you know that reference management software Mendeley is now available on Desktop@UCL?  For more information about Mendeley, see my colleague’s post on the Cruciform Library iSkills Blog, E-resource of the month: Mendeley“.  A web account and desktop software can be downloaded for use on personal computers, for free. http://www.mendeley.com/

Accessing UCL and IOE libraries for UCL and IOE students

Francine C Wood2 January 2015

IoE Library

The exciting news that the Institute of Education (IOE) became part of UCL in December, means that UCL and IOE students may use library services of both institutions.

To visit IOE’s Newsam Library and Archives

UCL students will need to present their UCL ID card at IOE Library and register. As announced in our November news bulletin, electronic resources previously provided by IOE are now available through our library catalogue and search tool, Explore.

To visit UCL Libraries

IOE students will first need to collect their UCL ID card.  The card has a barcode on the back that is connected to a UCL Library account. See information and FAQs for IOE students. Students will also need  a UCL computer username and password to access electronic resources including online journals and databases.  (Search Explore for the resource required and click the “view online” or SFX links where available.  For access to material behind subscription, enter your UCL username and password when prompted.) Please contact the UCL ISD helpdesk with queries about UCL userids.  New UCL library members may find our  Getting Started, Subject Guides and Training pages useful.

Please don’t hesitate to email library@ucl.ac.uk with any library related queries.

I hope that everyone finds this change beneficial and I’m looking forward to getting to know IOE library and colleagues myself!

Restricted access to Medical Science and Cruciform collections

Francine C Wood11 August 2014

With apologies for the late notice, please be aware that the following library collections are temporarily unavailable due to building works.

Medical Sciences Reading Room (books) on the 2nd floor of the Science Library, will be unavailable on Monday 11th August to allow for the window replacement works. (This is only expected to be for one day.) More information. A book fetching service will operate at the Assistance Desk on the ground floor.

The Cruciform Library has recently been located on the 2nd  floor of the Science Library, sharing a space with the Medical Science Periodicals. From today, this room will be unavailable while books, periodicals and library staff, relocate to the new Cruciform Hub, which is expected to open on Tuesday 26th August.  This means that;

  • Print copies of Medical Science Periodicals  will be unavailable this week.
  • The Cruciform collections, will now be unavailable until the Cruciform Hub opens.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.  Please email me with any queries at f.wood@ucl.ac.uk or lib-crucienq@ucl.ac.uk for Cruciform Library Enquires.

Science Library Windows Replacement Project

Francine C Wood25 July 2014

This summer sees a major project to replace all the windows on the Darwin Walk and Malet Place elevations of the Science Library with high energy rating double glazed windows.

Unfortunately, each room having a window replaced in it will be considered a building site and will need to be closed for several days.  This includes staff offices, service desks and various reading rooms.

We will do our best to keep disruption to a minimum and are aiming to offer a book fetching service for inaccessible material.  If you’re planning a trip for a particular title, please consider contacting us in advance to check that it’s available.

The schedule for closing spaces has yet to be confirmed, but work in the reading rooms for Psychology & Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences, is expected to take place in early August.  Information will be published on our Science Library Windows Replacement Project  news page, so please look there for updates.

Please accept our apologies for the disruption.  If anyone has any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Researching over the summer?

Library opening hours

It may be the last day of term, but I’m pleased to say that the Science Library’s 24 hour opening schedule will continue through June, July, August and September.

UCL staff and students may also visit a number of other university libraries over the summer, but please check local policy and  our access arrangements in advance. In particular, UCL staff and Ph.D. / Mphil students may like to register for a SCONUL Band A card before leaving London.

Literature searching support available

If you have any queries about literature searching or using reference management software,  please don’t hesitate to contact me.

You may also find our Moodle module WISE for Life and Medical Sciences helpful.

Have a lovely weekend!

Happy last day of term!

Francine C Wood13 June 2014

Happy day – it’s the last day of term and the sun is shining.

If you’ve finished for the summer now, congratulations!

Before you disappear though, please don’t forget to return any library books and pay any outstanding fines.  If you have any queries  or would like to make a payment over the phone,  give the Science Library Assistance Desk team a call on 020 7679 7795.

If you’re graduating, your library card will expire  before the date on the front of your student ID card, but don’t fret  – you’ll soon be entitled to Alumni Membership.  Our membership team will be able to advise:  lib-membership@ucl.ac.uk

Enjoy your summer!
