Welcome

UCL’s International Centre for Historical Research in Education (ICHRE) is a leading centre for historical research into education. We are based at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society and aim to make a significant contribution to the development of research, scholarship and teaching in the history of education, broadly defined.

ICHRE’s Director is Professor Gary McCulloch and the Centre is run by a group of historians based within the Department of Education, Practice and Society at IOE. Colleagues in ICHRE are responsible for research into UCL’s own histories, including the research and engagement project Generation UCL: 200 Years of Student Life in London in the run up to 2026 and in 2022 they were involved in a number of activities to mark IOE 120.

ICHRE was formed in 2014 to build on the strong tradition of historical research at the IOE, which has long been recognised as the leading UK base for the history of education and as one of the most significant centres worldwide. ICHRE works in close partnership with colleagues across UCL, including UCL Special Collections and UCL Culture. We also have strong links with relevant external associations including the History of Education Society (UK) and the International Standing Conference in the History of Education (ISCHE).
