    Dear Margot Finn

My step great-grandmother, then Miss Mary Skipp, was a member of the upstairs staff at Belmont House during the first quarter of the 20th century – possibly as a lady’s maid or even companion to the wife of the 5th Baron ( about whom I can find little of note except his longevity !). My family has kept a postcard scrapbook recording a world tour of 1912 on which she accompanied her employers. The photographs include portraits of Lord and Lady Harris – then presumably in their very early twenties – and assorted pictures of the inside and outside servants . I doubt if it would add much to your research but if you are at all interested in seeing this period piece I’d be happy to meet at some convenient time and place and bring the album with me. I should be interested to visit Belmont House if that would suit you. Yours sincerely , John hedger

I live in a house named BELMONT HOUSE in Mangalore, South West India. It was built by Michael Thomas Harris, Collector and Magistrate of Canara District, second son of Lord George Harris around the year 1820. He called his house BELMONT HOUSE after his home in Faversham, Kent. The name still adorns the pillar of the main entrance gate. Gregory Peres, Belmont House, Collectors Gate, Mangalore – 575 002. Just to remind our esteemed readers, Michael Thomas Harris is buried in the European Cemetry in Mangalore. I maintain his grave / tombstone on behalf of his family who are far away in England.

Looking for my mother’s finishing school before WWII runner by catholic nuns near Heresford, Wales. It was called Belmont House and she does have many pictures there. She was there sometime between 1934 and 1936. Planning a trip to England in May I was curious to visit the place and its surroundings and learn more about the history just before the war.
