Sustainability and Student Leadership in the Time of COVID-19

Amidst COVID-19, we have wondered many times how schools and teachers are needing to reinvent themselves in order to allow children around the globe to continue learning. But how many times have we talked about students being reinvented during these new learning processes? Could this be a good opportunity for them to start actively participating in their educational settings and communities?

To explore these questions, we recorded a podcast entitled Student-Led Sustainability Committees: What, How and Why? The podcast provides educators and students with guidelines to help create student-led sustainability committees. These committees would help students to identify and tackle sustainability issues in their own educational settings. Student-led initiatives encourage students to think critically about real-world issues as well as their own capabilities, helping them to develop essential skills – including leadership skills, self-reflection, responsibility, goal setting and collaboration. An initiative of this nature would empower students to become advocates, raising awareness among their peers and their own communities regarding COVID-19.

They produced this podcast for the module Education and International Development: Concepts, Theories and Issues.
