Financial support for IOE and UCL staff studying towards a doctorate

Policies are in place to support the professional development of our staff, and this includes subsidies for studying towards a doctorate. The details of how this operates depend on the kind of contract that a member of staff holds.

Staff on UCL contracts

Staff on UCL contracts are entitled to support under UCL’s Study Assistance Scheme. This can be used to support part-time study towards a doctorate, either at the IOE or elsewhere, subject to Head of Department support. The scheme can be used to support a capped subsidy of 50% of the programme fees. Information about the scheme, and the forms needed to apply to it, are available from UCL’s website.

Staff on IOE contracts

This process applies to staff who have already commenced a course under the IOE policy, or where an IOE employee on IOE terms and conditions commences a course at the IOE after December 2nd, 2014.

Staff in these categories may be entitled to support under the IOE’s fee remission policy, which was protected as part of the merger arrangements. This policy is available on UCL’s website. The level of remission is determined by the fractional size of the contract, as detailed in the policy, and only applies to programmes of study within the IOE. (To avoid doubt, a member of IOE staff pursuing a doctorate elsewhere in UCL would not be eligible for this support, but would be able to get support under the UCL Study Assistance Scheme.)

Staff wishing to claim fee remission should discuss this with their Head of Department. After the applicant has been accepted onto the programme, the Head of Department will need to contact Fiona Spencer (f.spencer@ucl.ac.uk), confirming the member of staff’s FTE and length of service. Fiona will then calculate the level of fee remission, and amend the student’s record in Portico accordingly.
