Progress update, 19 to 25 May 2012

By Tim Causer, on 25 May 2012

Welcome to the Transcribe Bentham progress update for 19 to 25 May 2012, during which time the project’s volunteer transcribers have achieved yet another landmark.

We have just broken the 3,500th transcript barrier – 3,502 manuscripts have now been transcribed or partially transcribed, which is an increase of 45 on last week’s total. An estimated 1.75 million words have now been transcribed by volunteers, plus extensive TEI markup. To have carried out this volume of work in less than two years is quite incredible. Of these transcripts, 3,257 (93%) are now complete and locked.

The more detailed state of progress is as follows:

  • Box 2: 330 manuscripts transcribed of 532 (62%)
  • Box 27: 302 of 350 (86%)
  • Box 35: 231 of 439 (52%)
  • Box 50: 58 of 92 (63%)
  • Box 51: 55 of 940 (5%)
  • Box 62: 51 of 565 (9%)
  • Box 70: 169 of 250 (48%)
  • Box 71: 564 of 665 (84%)
  • Box 72: 479 of 664 (72%)
  • Box 73: 137 of 156 (87%)
  • Box 79: 78 of 199 (39%)
  • Box 95: 46 of 147 (31%)
  • Box 96: 521 of 539 (96%)
  • Box 97: 25 of 288 (8%)
  • Box 100: 75 of 429 (17%)
  • Box 115: 245 of 307 (79%)
  • Box 116: 98 of 864 (11%)
  • Box 139: 38 of 38 (100%)
  • Overall: 46% of the 7,464 manuscripts uploaded to the website have been transcribed thus far.

Boxes 72 and 116 again proved to be the most popular during the past seven days.

Next week will be  busy one here at Transcribe Bentham. Dr Tim Causer will be speaking at King’s College London’s AHRC-funded Crowdsourcing Study Workshop on Monday 28 May, and will also attend and speak at the LIBER (Association of European Research Libraries) Promoting Access to Manuscript Content conference at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France from Tuesday 29 to Thursday 31 May.

Thank you, as ever, to all those who have given their time and effort in taking part in Transcribe Bentham during the last seven days. It remains, as ever, warmly appreciated.

3,457 manuscripts have now been worked on, which is an increase of 42 on last week’s total – we should, with a fair wind, hit our 3,500th transcript by this time next week. Of these, 3,213 (93%) are now locked and complete.

The more detailed state of progress is as follows:

  • Box 2: 330 manuscripts transcribed of 532 (62%)
  • Box 27: 302 of 350 (86%)
  • Box 35: 231 of 439 (52%)
  • Box 50: 58 of 92 (63%)
  • Box 51: 55 of 940 (5%)
  • Box 62: 51 of 565 (9%)
  • Box 70: 169 of 250 (48%)
  • Box 71: 561 of 665 (84%)
  • Box 72: 460 of 664 (69%)
  • Box 73: 137 of 156 (87%)
  • Box 79: 78 of 199 (39%)
  • Box 95: 46 of 147 (31%)
  • Box 96: 521 of 539 (96%)
  • Box 97: 25 of 288 (8%)

Boxes 72 and 116 were the most heavily transcribed during the past week. The New South Wales-related material in Box 116 has barely been up on the website for four weeks, and almost a tenth of its 864 manuscripts have already been transcribed already.

Thanks again to Anna-Maria Sichani for all her help in maintaining Transcribe Bentham during the past week.

And, of course, thanks as ever to all those who have given their time and effort to Transcribe Bentham during the past seven days, and helping to ensure the project’s continued success.
