UCL’s Fulbright Scholars

Julie Markham, Fulbright Scholar

Julie Markham, Fulbright Scholar

UCL embarked on an exciting partnership with the esteemed Fulbright Commission in 2010 welcoming postgraduate students from the United States to our home in the heart of London. We were able to greet one new UCL-Fulbright scholar with each academic year, and are delighted to have expanded and strengthened the association with the formation of a second joint award. This came in the form of the Fulbright-UCL Technology Entrepreneurship Postgraduate Award which began in 2013-14 meaning that we could gladly welcome two new Fulbright scholars this year.

When Julie began her course, she was relishing UCL’s focus on social enterprise in the exciting entrepreneurship scene in London. It seems to have lived up to expectations: “My experience in London has already changed me in a lot of ways. I have been exposed to ground-breaking startups emerging in the city, met with world-class researchers, and been surrounded by a truly global academic cohort that has opened my eyes to different world perspectives.”

Elly Cournoyer, Fulbright Scholar

Eily Cournoyer was equally enthusiastic about the chance to study for an MSc in Cancer in the British capital. Hailing from an island with the smallest state, she was keen to experience the cultural diversity that one of the world’s largest metropolitan cities had to offer. Eily graduated suma cum laude from the University of Rhode Island with degrees in Chemical Engineering and Biological Sciences where she investigated the use of nanoparticles in Cancer treatment. It was interning at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, that Eily cemented her desire to become a translational physician specialising in cancer research, a goal that her Fulbright-UCL Scholarship is helping her to achieve.

And finally, Julie offered up some sage words on the infamous British weather: “London, surprisingly, does not rain as much as everyone in America had me believe.”
