UCL now has access to Sovetskii Ekran Digital Archive via East View

The Sovetskii Ekran Digital Archive offers a unique window into the history of Soviet cinema, capturing the essence of a journal that was pivotal from 1925 to 1998. Sovetskii Ekran (Советский экран, Soviet Screen) was more than just a film journal – it was a cultural barometer of its times, chronicling the evolution of Soviet film against the backdrop of significant societal and political changes. Its pages, filled with film critiques, interviews, and reader polls, offer a comprehensive view of the cinematic landscape and its influence on Soviet culture.

Please note: The publication of Sovetskii Ekran was completely suspended from 1931-1938, 1942-1956, and 1999-2001. The lack of content for these periods is not a gap but reflects the journal’s publication schedule during these times.

Paid business experience with Gale, a global publisher

Gale are recruiting for a student ambassador at UCL to undertake awareness-building activities, so that more students can find out about, understand and use their digital archives and other library resources such as eBooks.

Gale is an international publisher of digital archives and other library resources. Gale’s primary sources include full archives of newspapers like The Times, The Telegraph, the Daily Mail and The Economist, as well as period and topical archives like Eighteenth Century Collections Online and Archives of Sexuality and Gender

Gale are recruiting students to undertake awareness-building activities, so more students find out about, understand and use these fascinating archives! Students from all year groups can apply.

The role lasts for the 2024-25 academic year and requires set activities for which Gale Ambassadors are paid £700. Plus, the role is great for your CV…

• Business experience – work directly with a global publisher.
• Run your own marketing activities – refine ‘marketing copy’ and images to make successful use of social media.
• Public speaking – run presentations and training sessions with your fellow students, obtaining valuable public speaking skills.

UCL now has access to the Energy Transition Show podcast portal. The Energy Transition Show covers the full range of energy transition globally, including grid power, all fuels (including oil, gas, coal, nuclear, solar, wind, and other emerging renewables), transportation systems, macroeconomics, and more. Featuring interviews with some of the most knowledgeable people in energy, longtime energy expert Chris Nelder explores the global energy markets and their ongoing transition away from fossil fuels and toward renewables.

UCL users can gain access by following the steps below:

• Visit Energy Transition Show
• Create an account from a valid @ucl.ac.uk email address and enter your preferred username
• Click Activate Account at the portal link
• After creating an account, new users will be redirected to a welcome page showing further instructions on how to access full episodes online, with your preferred podcast app. You will be asked to confirm your email address.

Users are encouraged to set up new episode email notifications on the Manage Subscription page after creating an account. Access is for UCL users only.

An important feature is the full-text reporting of court decisions in both government and private antitrust litigation.

Trial access to Gallup Analytics

UCL has trial access to Gallup Analytics until 28th April 2024

Gallup Analytics contains unique public opinion data and analysis compiled by Gallup. It includes answers to more than 125,000 questions, and responses from more than 3.5 million people interviewed in the Unites States since 1935.

The platform can be used to:

• perform detailed searches on hundreds of U.S. and global metrics
• examine data by demographic and socio-economic groups, including income, education, age and gender
• export data to create custom data tables, trends, charts and scatter plots

Gallup Analytics has three sections:

• Gallup Brain (historic surveys going back to 1935)
• Gallup World Poll (surveys from 160+ countries since 2005)
• Gallup Daily Tracking (daily surveys across the US since 2008)

Users can access Gallup’s U.S. Daily tracking and World Poll data to compare residents’ responses region by region and nation by nation to questions on topics such as economic conditions, government and business, health and wellbeing, infrastructure, and education.
