Royal Society internships

By Kieron L Jones, on 1 August 2013

Two paid policy internships are available at the Royal Society.

One internship will focus on policy for science, innovation and economic growth on a six month fixed term contract, ideally between October 2013 and March 2014.

One internship will focus on policy for higher education on a four month fixed term contract, ideally between late September 2013 and late January 2014.

The Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science, is looking for two policy interns to join our team. We expect both interns to be involved in a wide variety of projects and activities such as organising events, gathering and analysing oral and written evidence, drafting papers and engaging with stakeholders. We are looking for proactive all-rounders with particularly strong communication skills, and a willingness to undertake a range of diverse tasks is essential.

One intern will be mainly involved with our policy work around science, innovation and economic growth following on from our recent statement ‘Fuelling prosperity’ and groundbreaking report ‘Securing the scientific century’. For this post a strong interest in international science and innovation systems, economics and/or public policy is desirable.

The other will mainly work on two pieces of higher education policy work on the funding and training landscape for PhD students in the UK, and codes of conduct for PhDs and postdoctorate researchers. For this post a keen interest in UK higher education policy is desirable, particularly around Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

There will be one application and interview process for both posts. Candidates are invited to indicate which internship they prefer and we will endeavour to take this into account during selection.

For further information about the Royal Society’s policy work go to: http://royalsociety.org/policy/

Interviews for both posts will take place the week beginning 9 September.

For any questions, please contact the Royal Society’s HR department at: humanresources@royalsociety.org

Pre-exams extended library opening

By Kieron L Jones, on 9 March 2009

In order to support students preparing for exams, UCL Library Services increases the opening hours of its two largest and busiest campus libraries, the Main and Science Libraries, from the end of Term 1 until late May.

In the Main and Science Libraries, 24 hour opening will operate from Monday 30th March until Saturday 30th May. Please note however that, during this period, there are closures for Easter and shorter hours on the Bank Holidays. Please note also that 24 hour opening does not include the hours between closure on Saturdays at 2100 and re-opening on Sundays at 1100. Full details of arrangements, including news of any changes to planned opening, are available at: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/opening

Up to date details of arrangements for other UCL libraries are (or will be shortly) also available from the above site.

New Subject Librarian for Economics and Political Science awaits

By Kieron L Jones, on 14 May 2008

Peter Williams, editor of this blog, has now left his position of Subject Librarian for Economics and Political Science at UCL.

A new appointment to the post will be made in due course. During the interim we do hope to have a regular post of newly purchased books for the Political Science collection.

As an alternative, lists of newly acquired books for the whole of UCL Library Services can be found at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Library/newbooks.shtml

We apologise for any convenience caused and urge readers to check back in the near future.
